The world's largest museum complex, the Smithsonian has 16 phenomenal museums and galleries, plus a zoo. Some highlights include the National Air and Space Museum which has full-size air and spacecraft, including the Wright brothers' plane and the command module of the 1969 Apollo 9 mission, and the National Museum of Natural History which houses a fantastic mish-mash of a collection which includes the Hope Diamond, dinosaur bones, insects, a hall of gems and minerals. Or check out the National Museum of American History, home to the original American flag, the original Kermit the Frog, Fonzie's leather jacket, and Dorothy's ruby slippers. Admission to the Smithsonian Museums is free.

Ex'zoo'berant

Founded in 1889, the National Zoo (or 'Washington Zoo') is home to more than 2,000 creatures, including Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, the famous giant pandas; the animals are showcased in exciting exhibits such as "Amazonia," an enclosed tropical habitat with macaws, sloths, monkeys and poison dart frogs. Free programs include evening lectures, outdoor concerts, behind-the-scenes tours, classes and special events.

In memoriam

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is one of the city's best museums. When you enter, you'll be issued an ID card of an actual Holocaust victim; upon your exit you'll learn whether the person on the card survived the Holocaust. The exhibition consists of film footage, audio recordings, photos, and personal belongings, and concludes with a heartbreaking film in which Holocaust survivors tell their stories. At the end you can meditate and light a candle for the victims. The museum recommends not bringing children under 11. Admission is free.

Presidential Suites

The most famous house in the country, the White House has served as a residence, office, reception site and world embassy for every U.S. president since John Adams. Take a tour of the many rooms, including the Gold-and-White East Room, the scene of presidential receptions and weddings; and the Green Room, Thomas Jefferson's former dining room. Tours must be arranged through your congressional office at least one month in advance.

Monumental Beauty

A magnificent 555-feet tribute to the country's first president, the Washington Monument is the world's tallest free-standing work of masonry. It took 37 years to build due to declining contributions and the Civil War, but once President Grant approved federal monies to complete the project, the marble and granite structure finally opened to the public in 1888. After a 70-second elevator ride, visitors enjoy a spectacular 360-degree view of the Capitol and Smithsonian buildings, the White House, the World War II, Lincoln, and Jefferson Memorials, and more. Admission is free.

Temple of Dreams

A beautiful tribute to the nation's 16th president, the Lincoln Memorial attracts millions of visitors annually. The temple-like structure features an impressive 19-foot-high seated statue of Lincoln and 36 columns that represent the states of the Union at the time of his death. This is where Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous "I have a dream" speech. Rangers present 20- to 30-minute programs throughout the day.

You don't Zay!

Named one of the top 75 new restaurants in the world by Condé Nast Traveler in 2003, Zaytinya offers a full menu of Chef José Andrés' Mediterranean creations such as grilled ground lamb and tahini stuffed pita, and fried mussels with a walnut tarator sauce, just one reason Zaytinya has been featured in "Rachael Rays' Tasty Travels".

Garden Delights

Eating at Sarinah Satay House is a multi-sensory experience. Behind the front door lies a serene paradise: a lush, enclosed garden with real trees growing through the ceiling, the perfect spot to relax as you treat your palate to exquisite Indonesian cuisine. Menu items include grilled chicken satay with peanut dip and the nasi rames combination: chicken in coconut sauce, beef skewers and spicy green beans with rice.

Hands on

One of the first Ethiopian restaurants to open in Washington, Meskerem remains among the best. Diners sit at tables or on the floor to share large platters of savory chicken, beef, lamb or vegetables that they scoop up with injera, a traditional Ethiopian bread. The wine list includes Ethiopian honey wine and beer. Ethiopian singers perform Friday and Saturday nights.
