Ahoy, Buckos!Commissioned by King Felipe II of Spain in 1564, Fort San Felipe (El Morro de San Felipe) is the oldest fort in the New World. Originally constructed to protect Puerto Plata from pirates and corsairs, the fort took 33 years to build and has walls more than six feet thick. With its hilltop location offering a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean, the fort has always been a popular attraction for tourists and now serves as a museum showcasing its important role in history and housing old canons, guns and many other weapons used during war. Consistently rated one of the top restaurants in Puerto Plata by both Lonely Planet and Rough Guides, Café Cito combines jazz, blues and vintage rock 'n' roll with fresh Caribbean and Mediterranean culinary specialties and Puerto Plata's only "try before you buy" cigar bar. This is the kind of place that employs a retired Greek lady to spend two days making world-famous moussaka, so come prepared to chill out for at least 45 minutes before you eat. It's well worth the wait and we think you'll enjoy spending the time sipping Dominican cognac and smoking hand-rolled cigars.
