Red Hot

You'd never guess a century old wooden firehouse is Ponce's most photographed landmark. But when you stand in front of the Parque de Bombas, you'll understand the hype. Impossible to miss— its exterior is painted red with black stripes — the building is still in use. Built in 1882 for an agricultural exposition, Parque de Bombas served as the Ponce Fire Corps' headquarters from 1883 to 1989. In 1990, it reopened as a museum. Extinguish your curiosity by visiting the exhibits on the second floor and fuel up with the municipal band's free Sunday night concert. At Plaza Las Delicias.

Hilton Ponce Golf and Casino Resort
Located on the southern shore of Puerto Rico, Hilton Ponce Golf & Casino Resort is set in beautifully landscaped grounds facing the Caribbean Sea and offers spacious guest rooms with private balconies overlooking the gardens or the sea.
Coffee History 101

Considered one of Puerto Rico's best remaining examples of a coffee plantation, Hacienda Buena Vista is an 87-acre agricultural complex which allows visitors a unique insight into Puerto Rican history. Built in 1833, the estate house is furnished with authentic pieces from the 1850s, and is perfumed with the scent of freshly roasted, freshly brewed coffee. Open Friday - Sunday. Adults $7. Children $4. Reservations are required. Weekdays (787) 722-5882, weekends (787) 848-7020

Over the Boardwalk

A fun stop where you can loiter with lively locals, the Paseo Tablado La Guancha is a popular spot for families, teens, couples and elders alike. Featuring picturesque kiosks with tempting local fare like fritters, seafood, refreshing drinks and live music, the boardwalk is also the departure point for a regular scheduled weekend ferry to "Caja de Muertos" (Coffin Island), a small island of pristine beaches and an old lighthouse (built in 1887). It gets even better than that. After sunset, the boardwalk becomes Ponce's main nightlife destination with fun and entertainment for all ages. Ferry services: Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Take Me Out to the Graveyard

Discovered in 1975 after hurricane rains uncovered pottery, the Tibes Indian Ceremonial Center is the oldest cemetery in the Antilles with some 200 skeletons dating from 300 A.D. and plazas dating from 700 A.D. These ancient Indian sites include seven bateyes (ball fields), some carved with petroglyphs, said to have been used for a soccer-like game. On one of two dance grounds, stones line up with the sun during the equinox and solstice, making Tibes a pre-Columbian astronomical observatory. The Tibes also features a museum, an exhibit hall, and a reconstructed Taíno Indian village complete with huts, dance and sporting fields. Open Tuesday - Sunday 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Adults $2. Children $1. Phone: (787) 840-2255

Holy Guacamole!

Named after the patron saint of both Mexico and the city of Ponce, Lupita's is where spicy nightlife and glorious Mexican food come together. Set in a 19th century building, Lupita's is creatively decorated with authentic Mexican ponchos and serapes, elaborate fountains and dozens of chairs surrounded by colorful hand painted murals featuring amusing, surrealist desert scenes. This popular spot is also famous for its blue and green margaritas and its delicious specialties like tortilla soup, taco salads, grilled lobster tail with tostones and seafood fajitas. There's live music most nights and a live Mariachi band every Friday. On 60 Isabel St. Phone: (787) 848-8808

Finger Rican Good

For a taste of true, savory Puerto Rican cuisine, follow the crowd to La Montserrate. For the last 20 years, this restaurant has been a locals' favorite and it has kept tourists flying in for seconds. Located by the Caribbean Sea, La Montserrate offers tasty Puerto Rican specialties like octopus salad, four kinds of "asopao" (Puerto Rican rice stew with lobster, shrimp, chicken and mixed seafood), steaks, and seafood, including the traditional whole red snapper in Creole sauce, great with a side of "tostones" (fried green plantains) and a Piña Colada. On Sector Las Cucharas Route 2. Phone: (787) 841-2740

Taste Mark's the Spot

One of Puerto Rico's best restaurants, Mark's at the Meliá is notorious for Chef Mark French's creative renditions of traditional Puerto Rican dishes. Chef Mark French has won praise from the Caribbean's Chef Association and was even named "Chef of the Caribbean 2000" in Fort Lauderdale thanks to creations like tostones topped with sour cream and caviar, vanilla flan layered with rum cake and topped with a caramelized banana and the award-winning bread pudding soufflé with coconut vanilla sauce. The menu constantly changes, but it gives customers plenty of reasons to constantly return. Open Wednesday through Sunday. On 75 Cristina Street. Phone: (787) 284-6275
